This Braille game can help pupils to learn different Grade 2 contractions. Two sets of cards, each set with words containing the same contraction, are muddled up in a pot. Two objects (boy/girl, dog/cat etc) are placed at the bottom of each ladder and the pupil guesses who will reach the top of their ladder first. The pupil takes a Braille card from the box. If it is read correctly it can be placed on the ladder for that contraction. Who will be the quickest to get to the top of the ladder (boy/girl, dog/cat)? Did the pupil guess correctly?

This game can help pupils to learn different Grade 2 contractions and has been used alongside the ‘Take Off’ Reading Scheme. Braille cards are made containing contractions being introduced in a particular book. The Braille cards are paper clipped to brightly coloured card fish, which can be scattered over a table or in a tray. The pupil goes fishing with the magnet and reads the cards they catch. How quickly can the pupil catch and read accurately 10 cards?

This game can help pupils to learn Braille numbers and different Grade 2 contractions. Each house has a number on it’s flap. Braille words, containing contractions being learned, are hidden under each flap. The pupil takes the post van along the road to the house number requested by an adult. If they read the Braille word at that house accurately, they can collect it to take to the depot to post. How quickly can the pupil collect 5 Braille words to post?

Tactile covers to home-made books can bring characters alive and make stories more interesting for pupils. These Braille books and book covers were produced by Mrs. June Stewart (Specialist VI Support Assistant, Dudley MBC) and were all about the adventures of a little alien.
